Shamsur Rahman was a Bangladeshi poet, columnist and journalist of Indian origin. A great literal figure in the second half of the 20th century, he is considered a key figure in Bengali literature. He is also regarded as the unofficial poet laureate of Bangladesh. He was born in Dhaka of British India in 1929. He hails from Pahartoli of Narshingdi district. He was born as the fourth child to his parents. His parents had 13 kids. He passed matriculation in 1945 and completed IA from Dhaka College. Soon after his graduation from the college, he started writing poetry at the age of 18.

কবি শামসুর রাহমান জন্মেছিলেন ঢাকা শহরে (জন্ম : ২৩শে অক্টোবর ১৯২৯, মৃত্যু : ১৭ই আগস্ট ২০০৬) ঢাকা তখন ছিল ফাঁকা ফাঁকা। মানুষের এমন দমবদ্ধ অবস্থার কথা তখন কল্পনাও করা যেত না। এত দালানকোঠা আর পিঁপড়ের সারির মতো গাড়ি ছিল না। ছিল পাড়ায় পাড়ায় আস্তাবল, ঘোড়ার গাড়ি, গাড়োয়ান, বাতিওয়ালা, ভিস্তিওয়ালা, ফেরিওয়ালা। গলির ভেতরে ছোটবড় বাড়িতে ছিল মানুষের বাস। স্কুল ছিল, মসজিদ-মন্দির ছিল, আর ছিল পালা -পাবর্ণে নানা আনন্দ-উৎসব। এসবের ভেতর দিয়ে শৈশব-কৈশোরে বেড়ে উঠেছেন কবি। সেই সব দিনের আনন্দ-বেদনার স্মৃতিকথা লিখেছেন সরল-সুন্দর গদ্যে। ভারি সুন্দর বই।
